Singlish or not, not my business

Had a heated debate for GP today regarding the use of Singlish in Singapore and whether it should be banned. Everyone basically dragged the whole debate into the situation whereby trade or good foreign relationships with other countries relied entirely on your ability to speak standard English. Bleah. Here, I would like to state a few points about MY stand on this matter, although it’s going to bore a lot. Even the most accurate type of English spoken here is still not up to what our colonial masters, the British, had brought here in the first place. This, is simply because we are Singaporeans, not British. If everyone could speak like a true blue British, we should just rename Singapore to become a distant continent of the UK. And if you are a true blue Singaporean but you speak like some Cambridge professor, get out of my face. I’m not discriminating here, but just trying to point out that we, Singaporeans, will never be able to grasp proper English within the next few millenniums to come. Or ever. So stop debating about speaking standard English in my face or I’ll kick your ass. And, don’t ever speak with an accent (not to mention a very fake one) in my face or try to correct my English. That’s some real pathetic behavior you have there.
